What Matters Most When Renting
Here are some tips on what to keep in mind when you’re renting a self storage unit for the first time:
- The size of your items and how many there are
It’s important to get the right size unit. Our on-site manager can help you nail down the right unit, but you can also try using our online size guide.
Remember to account for the “dead space” you need to include in the unit. This means giving yourself room to walk through to the back of the units and navigate the items within to find what you need if it isn’t at the front!
- How often you’ll access your belongings
If you plan to frequently access your unit—especially if that means moving items in and out—then you may want to consider one of our drive-up access units for the most convenient experience.
- You may stay longer than you predict
Many people think they will only rent for a month or two and then move their items out. This often leads people to choose the cheapest option available. Some facilities will get you in at a low price and then raise your rates every few months. Unfortunately, people usually stay for over a year on average despite their plans. Make sure you’re being realistic with your plans so that you get the best deal for your situation!
- Are your items sensitive to humidity?
If you have items that may be damaged by humid conditions, there are a few things you can do to help protect them:
- Use a moisture-absorbing product like DampRid
- Place your belongings on palettes instead of directly on the floor
- Favor plastic totes over cardboard boxes if possible
